Arizona DU Chapter making a difference in its community

The West Valley Chapter of Ducks Unlimited is not only one of the top chapters in Arizona when it comes to fundraising for wetlands habitat, they also made it a point to directly make a difference in their community this past holiday season, holding several canned food drives for a local food bank.

“Our chapter always believes in giving back to the community,” said West Valley Chair Shawn Gibbons, who is also the Arizona state chair. “Several of us volunteer at local food banks because it feels good to do something nice for others.”

The chapter held its first canned food drive this past Thanksgiving, partnering with the West Phoenix Sportsman’s Warehouse. For each canned good donation, participants in the food drive received a raffle ticket for a gift card paid for out of pocket by chapter members and the store manager. The end result was overly positive, netting a couple hundred pounds of canned goods.

The next month West Valley went even bigger with a two-week raffle that ended up netting four hundred pounds of canned goods and over $100 in donations to the Phoenix Rescue Mission’s community market.

“It’s great to give back,” said Shawn, who also volunteers for the food bank at the hospital he works for. “I’ve never been in need–but working down at the food banks you learn each person has a story.”

“It’s all good!”
