Ducks Unlimited attends Western Governors’ Association Annual Meeting

Western Regional Director of Public Policy Gary Link recently attended the Western Governors’ Association Annual Meeting in late June representing Ducks Unlimited. Ten western governors, Steve Bullock (Montana), Dennis Daugaard (South Dakota), Matt Mead (Wyoming), Brian Sandoval (Nevada), Gary Herbert (Utah), Bill Walker (Alaska), David Ige (Hawaii), Doug Burgum (North Dakota), John Hickenlooper (Colorado), and C.L. “Butch” Otter (Idaho) met in Whitefish, Montana to discuss regional issues focused on natural resources and the Endangered Species Act, as well as the health of waterfowl.

Newly-appointed Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke was also in attendance and spoke to the attendees regarding the Trump administration’s plans for public lands. Link was able to spend a few minutes with the Secretary and stressed the need to continue to turn dirt for conservation, while thanking him and Governor Bullock of Montana for their continuation of waterfowl protection areas.

“Meeting with the governors of the western states, and Secretary Zinke, was immensely beneficial for the ducks,” said Link. “Our proactive engagement, in conservation, in public policy, and in grassroots fundraising, is key to decision makers helping DU turn dirt while maintaining & growing wetlands across North America. The western governors, Secretary Zinke, and all DU members are dedicated stewards of our environment. DU works hard to provide the best science available to these decision makers for the habitat & waterfowl we advocate on behalf.”
