Promoting the plight of waterfowl during a drought

(L to R): Dave Shuford of Point Blue, Leigh Martinez of CBS 13, Mark Smith of DU

Ducks Unlimited is teaming with several other conservancy groups in a coalition dubbed Water for Wetlands, which includes Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, Point Blue, Wildlife Defenders, and the California Waterfowl Association, to raise public awareness to the plight of billions of migratory water birds as the California drought continues to pose a threat to their annual migration.

To date, the group has been very aggressive in attracting media coverage on the subject, and just this morning took part in an interview at the Cosumnes River Preserve just outside of Sacramento. Ducks Unlimited’s Wester Region Director of Public Policy, Mark Smith, spoke to CBS13’s Leigh Martinez about the efforts DU and the coalition is making to secure water for refuges and farmers, alike, so that these birds will have adequate habitat and food through the spring.

If you are in the Sacramento market, you can watch the interview tonight on CBS13’s 5 p.m. newscast. We’ll also try to post a link to the piece once it becomes available.
