In a desert region where wetlands habitat is limited and duck hunting is far from tradition, the Sierra Vista Chapter of Ducks Unlimited in Arizona recently completed its Fourth Annual Youth Waterfowl Hunt to positive reviews.

Eleven youth hunters from within the state, as well as their mentors and observing adult guardians, spent the entire weekend at Sulphur Springs Valley in Cochise County at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area hunting on flooded natural grass fields built by Ducks Unlimited in conjunction with the Arizona Game and Fish Department in 2004. By the end of the weekend the group bagged 10 ducks, including mallards, pintails, gadwall, shovelers and a snow goose.

Due to the fundraising abilities of the Sierra Vista Chapter, and in partnership with the local American Legion Post 52, the entire event was free of cost to the over 40 volunteers, hunters and family members who attended. More importantly, lifelong memories were forged and future duck hunters created.

“The hunt was another great success with the youth and their families experiencing a phenomenal weekend of waterfowling and camaraderie,” said Chris Klasen, the chairman of DU’s Sierra Vista Chapter. “I must give thanks to all the volunteers from Sierra Vista, American Legion Post 52 and Arizona Game and Fish Department for providing a weekend that will not be forgotten.”
